When You Hurt. Find A True Friend.

Friends. . . find them.

This is by far one of the most important posts I can write in this grief series I have been working on these past few weeks.  You will meet one of my true friends in my next post.  For those of you who have read my book, she is one of the stars. She suffered her own loss a year after Doug was killed.  Find out her story tomorrow.

But first, I need to say, when you hurt, find a friend.  Find one that will sit and listen.  Find one that will just “be there.”  Find one that will stick by you when you change, because change you will.

Find them.

Some “friends” will try to fix it.  Some will try to tell you how to heal.  Some will try to tell you what to do.  Some will try to push you in the direction they think you should go.

Run from those people.  Don’t run forever, but run now.

Find those friends who will sit and listen and be and exist and help you in any way that you need to be helped.  They are a rare jewel.  They are priceless.  If they aren’t members of your family, they will become your family.  You will never be able to replace them, and they will never want to be replaced.

They will become blood.

I can’t tell you how to find them.  God was gracious to me in the years before Doug was killed.  He gathered an army for me that came to the battlefront when those soldiers knocked on my door.  They sheltered me from anything that might possibly upset me.  They were a wall, a rock, a shild around my life for some time.

Listen to who God can be for us. . .

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer.  My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge.  My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. . . The cord of death encompassed me. . .the snares of death confronted me.  In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried to my God for help. . .” Ps 18:2,4

Part of God’s sheltering presence are His saints.  I was lucky enough to have them surround me.  Find those who will be yours.  If you don’t have any, pray for them.  God will send His soldiers.  You don’t have to fight the war alone.

For the battle is not yours, but Gods  (2 Chron. 20:15).
