Overcome The World By The Truth – HIM.

In Monday’s post, I talked about being hopeful despite the pain.  That our pain will be rewarded if we are faithful to our Savior.  Now I want you to focus on another few verses.

“In this world you will have trouble, but take heart, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

“What is seen is temporary, what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  John 8:32

These verses may not seem to go together, but they do.  God is trying to tell us that this world is full of pain.  This is not what God intended for us.  That was not His plan.  We are the ones that chose pain in the garden

Enter Jesus.  He comes to defeat our pain.  God has assigned Him just one small task – He has to overcome the world.

Wow.

Could you do that?  Overcome the world?   No.  Impossible.

But He did. He paid the price of your sin, and He paid the price of mine.  He overcame (John 16:33).

But here is the kicker.  Jesus commands His church to overcome in Revelation.

Impossible?  The new answer is “no.”   Jesus overcame for us!

All we have to do is remain in Him.

John 15:4 says, “Remain in Me and I will remain in you.”

I have met Christians that struggle with this.  “We must overcome!” one told me recently.  She meant she had to fight to overcome the world.  She was trying to use her own strength.  If I had to use my own strength, I might as well throw in the white flag right now.  Zero percent chance I can win.

But I don’t have to, because Jesus overcame for me.  All I have to do is keep the faith!

Glory!

When we remain in Him, when we are overcoming, we begin to recognize the lies of the world.

A few times in my journal, when I was trying to discern the truth of what He was telling me, I wrote things like this:

It is still amazing to me that when you walk into the world how soon it can trap you.

You walk into the world and it takes you over.  Always come home to this, to Jesus, and to God.

I understood a profound truth.  You have to come home to the Word, because the Word is Him (John 1) and if you depart from the Word, you can be tricked by the world.

Remaining  in Him means to remain in the Word.

“If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of mine.”  John 8:31

If you remain in His Word, you know what will happen?  It is in the next verse.

“You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

There are so many things in that one verse we could sink our teeth into, but I want to look at two.

First, the Word is the truth.  And if you know that truth, you believe in His promises, and you will be free.  You will understand that “what is seen is temporary but what is unseen is eternal.”  You will begin to understand that this world is fallen, but God promises us a better world – Eden reborn (Joel 2:3).  He gives us that hope so that we can remain faithful to His Son – so that we overcome by faith, not by sight.  Let’s look at that verse one more time.

“You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

Now, I already said that Jesus is the Word.  But there is something else Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” John 14:6.

So when we know the truth, we know Jesus, and the truth – Jesus – will set us free.  Free from the chains of this life and hopeful for the world to come.

Wow.  There are so many diamonds in scripture!  The truth will set you free.  Of course!  Of course it will!  Because the TRUTH is HIM.

May His name be praised!  Glory!

Overcome, Christian soldiers!  Overcome by knowing the TRUTH.  To  know the TRUTH you have to stay in the WORD.

He is the TRUTH.  He is the WORD.

Remain.  Stand firm.  Be strong.  Overcome through HIM.
