I was reading Joshua the other day. I meantioned in my post Don’t Quit how sometimes we tend to believe those heroes in the bible never had any doubts, fears, or insecurities. But that is not the case. Take Joshua.
Moses had just died. And I mean THE Moses. Joshua was Moses’ right hand man, so logically God tells Moses to appoint Joshua to succeed him as leader of the Israelites.
Those “stiff necked” people were now Joshua’s responsibliity. And the guy Joshua always relyed on? Gone. After Moses’ death, God spoke to Joshua. Let’s look at what He said.
“No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.” Joshua 1:5
So far, so good. Joshua should start feeling really good about himself even though he is leading those stiff-necked people. I mean, God just told him that no one would be able to stand before him, and God would be with him always. Sounds fairly awesome to me.
But Joshua wasn’t convinced. There may have been doubts swimming around in his mind. Or a little insecurity he had to overcome. Or perhaps a little fear. How do I know? God kept talking and He told Joshua the same thing OVER and OVER. Listen.
“BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only BE STRONG AND VERY COURAGEOUS. . . Have I not commanded you? BE STONG AND COURAGEOUS! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:6-9
I mean, God had to tell him to be strong and courageous, not once, not twice, but THREE times.
Think Joshua was shaking in his boots? You bet he was. He was now the leader of a nation and that nation had to drive off all the other nations living in the land. Joshua knew once the war started, it would continue for years. God was trying to convince him, you can do it because I AM WITH YOU!
Which gets me back to one of the points I made in the secret to a stress free life : GOD is doing the doing – you just need to abide. If the task seems insurmountable it is because God wants you to know that HE is the one performing it – not YOU!
Joshua needed that reminder.
And it gets better.
Joshua spoke to the Israelites and the Israelites responded that they would obey whatever Joshua said. At the end of their responce, do you know what they said to Joshua?
You guessed it. “BE STRONG AND VERY COURAGEOUS.” Joshua 1:18
I just find that facinating. God wanted to drive His point home so He even used the people to relay the message to Joshua. Think God doesn’t speak through His people? Think again!
Sometimes we think our doubts, fears, and insecurities bother God. We think that if we have them, something is wrong with us. I am sure it is true that if we let our doubts, fears, and insecurities take control of us we are going way off course, but to be sure, the great heroes of old stuggled with occational “freak outs.”
Daddy God is so awesome He will continue to reach out and assure you, “I am right here, child. I am right here.”
So today, Christian solder. “Be strong and very courageous” and know that “the Lord your God will be with you whereever you go.”
Go. Trust. Believe. And SHINE.
