It is Memorial Day. Not a good day for me. It always comes a few days after the anniversary of the death of my husband.
One of my besties asked me the other day, “Does it bother you when you see advertisements for great barbecuing tips and other “party ideas” for Memorial Day? I had to think for a minute because I guess over the course of the last 6 years I have done a good job of avoiding such advertisements, but this year I saw a few of them. And yes, it does bother me.
I don’t mind parties or cookouts on Memorial Day; what I do mind is parties or cookouts without a thought for what this day is actually about.
This is a holiday many people don’t get. This isn’t a holiday to honor the military. This isn’t a holiday for honoring those who serve. There is a holiday for that, and it is called Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a holiday honoring those who fought and died for this country. Memorial Day is a holiday celebrating the life of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Memorial Day is a holiday to remember the families who live with the cost of that sacrifice. Memorial Day is a holiday to remember you are walking and breathing in this country because there are some great men and women who actually loved America enough to die for it.
So today, I want you to listen to a song. Those men and women we honor today aren’t coming home. Those men and women we honor today died for our freedom. The coke in your hand is about freedom. The car you drive is about freedom. The house you live in is about freedom. Without those men and women America wouldn’t be America and we would not be free.
So today, honor them. If you know someone they have left behind, send a prayer their way. Because those families left behind live with the cost of freedom each and every day.
So listen and remember…
