Spilled Punch

I was at the pool the other day with my child and his best friend.   They were drinking some fruit punch on their towels.  Dak had purple and his friend had red.  So I am just hanging out with them, listening to their conversation.  Dak says, “Rishi, you spilled.”  I turned and saw that in fact, Dak was right.  There was a big red stain matching the exact color of Rishi’s beverage on his towel.  From the looks of it, it was still wet.

Rishi replies, “No I didn’t.  That was already there.”

Dak says, “I saw you. You spilled.”

“No, no, I didn’t,” Rishi insists.  “That is not mine.”

I was incredulous.  It was obvious there was a big red stain on the towel. It was obvious it was Rishi’s. It was obviously fresh. Rishi was obviously lying.

My mouth dropped open, “Rishi, you don’t lie about it!  It is no big deal that you spilled, even if you did it on purpose!  It is a towel for crying out loud.”

Rishi smiles and tries to turn away as I am emphasizing the non-seriousness of the issue.

There is a lesson here.

How many times does God do that to us?  “Ah, you gotta little mess there, don’t you?”

“No.  No I don’t.  You are mistaken, God.  I didn’t do that.  It has been there a long time.  I didn’t cause that to happen.”

“Ah,” God says, ” I saw you.”

“No.  No you didn’t.  I didn’t do it.”

Interesting.  What are we sitting beside, ignoring, on our towel?   Is it something that we did or continue to do, but something that we brush under the rug as “not a real issue?”  It may not even be that big of a deal.  It may be something that God is just trying to tweak in your life in order for you to reach your full potential.  It might be a habit He wants you to give up, or an hour of leisure He wants you to sacrifice.  It might be a lunch out that needs to be done away with, or an hour of sleep He wants you to forgo.  But it could be far more ugly than that, far more “staining” to our towels.  Is there something we are hiding?  Something deep?  Something not seeable by everyone else but defiantly noticeable to God?

Are we ignoring the spilled punch on our towel?  Are we denying the spilled punch on our towel?

Listen to scripture.

“Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”  Ephesians 5:11

Spilled punch.  We all have it, don’t we?  The question is, are we ignoring it?  Or are we going to put the towel in the wash?

Something to think about.
