Joy To The World – Not A Christmas Carol

I was at church this Sunday and our band sang “Joy to the World.”  I have always loved that song, but I really love it around Christmas.  The kicker is, when you listen to the words, it is not a Christmas carol. Say what?   Nope, not a Christmas carol.  I mentioned this last Christmas in my blog, but it is good to be reminded every year because over the next few weeks you will be hearing Joy to the World quite a bit.  It isn’t wrong to sing at Christmas, but when you really understand the meaning, it becomes even more fabulous than you think it is!

Because Joy to the World is a song about Jesus’ second coming. It is a song about Him walking on the earth and ruling it.  It is a song about triumph over evil and an eternity of peace!  I am giddy just typing it!  So, I want you to take  a moment and look at the song in more detail.  I have added scripture for your reference.

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;

“And the Lord, my God, will come. . .and the Lord will be king over all the earth; in that day the Lord will be the only one, and His name the only one.”  (Zech 14:5b, 9)

Let every heart prepare Him room,

“And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.  Then you will see and be radiant, and your heart will thrill and rejoice.” (Is 60:1b, 5a)

And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

“And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”  (Rev 5:13)

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns!

“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever.”  (Rev 11:15b)

Let men their songs employ;

“And they sang a song of Moses; the bond-servant of God; and the song of the Lamb saying, “Great and marvelous are Your works, O Lord God, the Almighty; Righteous and true are Your ways, King of the nations!” (Rev 15:3)

While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

“Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all it contains; let the field exult, and all that is in it.  Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the Lord, for He is coming , for He is coming to judge the earth.” (Psalm 96:11-13a)

No more let sins and sorrows grow,

“Yes, You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” (Micah 7:19)  “And God will wipe every tear from their eye.”  (Rev 7:17b)

Nor thorns infest the ground;

“Instead of the thorn bush the cypress will come up, and instead of the nettle the myrtle will come up, and it will be a memorial to the Lord, for an everlasting sign which will not be cut off.”  (Is 55:13)

He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

“Because he who is blessed in the earth will be blessed by the God of truth; and he who swears in the earth will swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hidden from My sight.”  (Is 65:16)

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.”  (Zeph 3:17)

Wow.  So the next time you hear Joy to the World, I want you to pause, lift  your hands to the sky and say,

“Amen and Amen!  Come Quickly, Lord JESUS!”
