There Is No “Safe” Faith

A few Sunday’s ago, my pastor said something that has stuck with me.

“There is no safe faith.”

He is right.

He used the illustration of the Israelites crossing the Jordan to get to the promised land.

The river was at flood stage.  It was a dangerous current, swift and threatening.

God said He would part the water but only after the priests carrying the ark of the covenant walked into the swirling abyss.

They had to have the faith to take the first, dangerous step into the swift current.  Then and only then would they see God’s glory.

A friend of mine has a lab named Bentley.  One day my friend was outside on the driveway and Bentley had been left in the house.  No problem.  There was only the small issue of the window between them.  So Bentley takes a leap of faith and jumps through the glass.  In my last post I told you about dog-like faith.  That is dog-like faith.  I mean the dog jumped through a glass window just to be near her!

Let me ask you a question, if God is standing on the other side of the window, beckoning us out of  the “safe house,” would we jump?  If God asked you to  take a leap of faith and jump through the glass, would you?  The glass could be our fears, the glass could be our insecurity, the glass could be a move across country, the glass could be a change of job, the glass could be a missionary trip, the glass could be. . . anything at all that makes you uncomfortable.

Remember the fiery furnace?  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego would not bow down to a false god.  They were warned, the fire was heated seven times hotter, and they were thrown alive into the flames (Daniel 3:19).  Would we have the faith to do that?

Behead me for crying out loud.  Shoot me in the head for Pete’s sake.  But do not, and I repeat, do not throw me in a fire.  I can’t even imagine.

But Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego had moxie.  And they had faith – dog-like faith.  They thought aloud, “If Daddy wanted to save them, Daddy could” (Dan. 3:17).

And Daddy did.

When they came out of the fire they didn’t even SMELL LIKE SMOKE (Dan. 3:27)!!!!!  God was glorified.  And the false god was demoralized.  Yay, for Daddy!

There is no safe faith.  Sometimes you are thrown into the fire.

In your life and in mine, there is a flooding river, there is a glass window, and there is a fiery furnace.  Do we have the moxie of Jesus?  Do we have the faith to go through the barrier?

Would we jump out of the safe house to be closer to God?  To feel His presence more?  To be “in his plan” and not “in the safe house.”

You see, there is no safe faith.  True faith gets a little dirty, a little bloody, a little bit of glass in the paw.  True faith gets “out of the safe house” and “into God’s plan.”

If you remain in the safe house, you miss God’s plan for you life.  If you aren’t a little uncomfortable in what you are doing, you might want to ask yourself if you have jumped through the glass like Bentley.

Listen to this scripture.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you.  When you walk though the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you.  For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. . . Do not fear, for I am with you.” Isaiah 43:2-3, 5

When we fear the river, the glass, or the fire, we are focusing on our own strength and not God’s.  We can’t do it.  But Daddy can.

As Jesus said, all we gotta have is a little faith.

You ready to jump through the glass?

God is standing on the other side.

Have a little moxie.
