I drove into my neighborhood this morning and saw one of my Hindu neighbors praying outside facing the sun. I have seen him do this multiple times. When I drive by before he goes to work, he is always outside, standing in a suit, head bowed and hands together in prayer, facing the rising sun. He does not do this for a second or two. He does this for some time, at times even bowning to the ground before standing again, hands immediately going back together, as the sun rises higher in the sky.
Cars pass him buy. Walkers pass him by. Runners pass him by.
And still he stands, firm in his faith.
I think the same thing every time.
Are Christians that bold? Am I that bold?
I mean, I wear my cross boots all the time, but Madonna wears crosses too. I speak about Jesus when I teach Bible study, but do I faithfully bring Him up in conversation at the grocery store? I write this blog, but it is in the comfort of my own home. When I push “publish” I will never know how many people will read it. I talk to my friends about God, but do I really talk to anyone else?
I pray in private, but would I go outside and lift my hands to Daddy God and pray as the cars are passing by?
How BOLD am I really? Am I BOLD at all?
I ran across a verse this morning I had underlined in lime green pen (I use lime green to tell me it is a verse speaking directly to ME.). I know for a fact God has been telling me not to fear being bold. I have been in training for about three years now. Don’t think the training is quite over. Is God’s training ever over? Probably not.
But here is the verse I found underlined in lime green pen, dated January 5, 2012, with a special note to myself, “Be Bold, Nic.”
“And also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth BOLDLY to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it BOLDLY, as I ought to speak.” Ephesians 6:18
We ought to speak boldly, not to be obnoxious, but to show our faith and how confident we are in our faith. But could most Christians today defend what they believe? Do most Christians today even KNOW what they believe?
“But in your heart honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope (the confidence) that is in you; yet do so with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15
In other words, be BOLD but respectful. Isn’t that how Jesus was? Yes. To say “Jesus was bold” is an understatement. He was so bold it was amazing. Yet, He was respectufl. As we should be.
There are a lot of differing thoughts these days. There are a lot of “opinions” about Jesus. But there is only one TRUTH (John 14:6). I may not know everything, and if I claimed to know everything I hope you would stop reading this blog immediately, but here is what I do know – I know THE truth (Jesus). And I need to stand up and be BOLD if that TRUTH is in ANY way compromised.
We all do. We all need to be prepared to defend our faith.
When we are put to the test, will we stand firm like my neighbor in his driveway? Will we be prepared to answer the critique? Will be bow our heads and pray when we are told we can’t? Will be be like Daniel? Will we have RESOLVE?
I sure hope so. Because Jesus is worth it. Isn’t He? Yes, yes, and a thousand times yes.
I want to leave you with a prayer.
Daddy God, Help us be BOLD in our walk with you. Help us BOLDY declare your TRUTH. Help us never fear condemnation from mortal man. Help us SHINE your Son BOLDY and without FEAR.
Amen and Amen, Come Quickly Lord Jesus?
